WORSHIP COMMISSION


CONTACT: Chairperson
IMPORTANCE: To assist in planning the liturgical celebrations that best serve the needs of the parish. Allows the community to contribute to the ongoing evaluation and improvement of all matters relating to any aspect of worship at Sacred Heart.
WHAT: To discern the worship, liturgical and prayer needs of the parish in accord with liturgical directions, guidelines and policies of the Church; to be involved in scheduling celebrations and prayer services appropriate to the liturgical year and work with committees for special seasonal events.
TIME: Two hours per month for meeting, twelve months of the year. Additional time given to specific tasks for which members are responsible.
SKILLS: A basic knowledge of liturgy and a desire to learn more about, and help bring about a vibrant worshiping community. Personal creative skills (artistic, musical, etc.) are helpful but not necessary.
TRAINING: Continuing education and formation workshops offered by the Vicariate and Archdiocese and the monthly study sessions at regular meetings.

 

SEASONAL LITURGICAL PLANNING COMMITTEE

IMPORTANCE: Provides support to the Worship Commission and allows members of the community to participate in planning for the liturgical seasons.
WHAT: Plan and implements the para-liturgical celebrations during the seasons of Lent/Triduum/Easter/Pentecost and Advent/Christmas/Epiphany.
TIME: Two or three meetings for each season and additional time necessary to perform specific tasks for which members volunteer.
SKILLS: A basic knowledge of liturgy, a healthy imagination, and a willingness to work as a part of a group.
TRAINING: Education provided at meetings as needed. Attendance at Vicariate and Archdiocesan workshops that provide educational and spiritual opportunities in the area of worship is helpful.

 

ROSARY ALTAR SOCIETY

CONTACT: President
IMPORTANCE: The Altar Society was formed to provide funds and service for the needs of the church. Members support the commissions of the Council of Catholic Women of the Archdiocese of Detroit.
WHAT: Attend monthly meetings and participate in the functions sponsored by the society. Pay yearly dues.
TIME: Two hour monthly meetings, September to June and whatever time is required for society sponsored activities according to the individual's personal schedule.
SKILLS: None
TRAINING: None

 

SACRED HEART CHORISTERS

CONTACT: Music Minister
IMPORTANCE: To create a living and authentic celebration of worship (The Liturgy Documents, Liturgical Music Today, #4)
WHAT:

Specialize in choral singing (singing in "parts") of traditional and contemporary hymns. Participate at one Mass each weekend.

TIME: One and one-half hour rehearsal once each week, September through June.

SKILLS:

An ability and desire to sing.
TRAINING: Provided at rehearsals.

SACRED HEART GUITAR/VOCAL ENSEMBLE and PROCLAIM/ACCLAIM

CONTACT: Music Minister
IMPORTANCE: To create a living and authentic celebration of worship (The Liturgy Documents, Liturgical Music Today, #4)
WHAT: Specialize in contemporary liturgical music. Group members may sing, play an instrument, or both. Participate at one Mass each weekend.
TIME: Weekly rehearsals and one Mass each weekend.
SKILLS: The ability and desire to sing and/or play an instrument.
TRAINING: Provided at rehearsals.

 

CANTORS

CONTACT: Music Minister
IMPORTANCE: To bring the song of Scriptures to life.
WHAT: Sing at one Mass, every other weekend and at other special celebrations such as funerals, funeral vigils, weddings, baptisms, vespers and penance services.
TIME: Weekly rehearsals
SKILLS: A pleasant singing voice and the ability to assist and lead a congregation in song.
TRAINING: Provided at rehearsals, and at various workshops and seminars as they are available throughout the year.

 

BREAD BAKERS

CONTACT: Pastoral Associate
IMPORTANCE: "The nature of the sign demands that the material for the eucharistic celebration truly have the appearance of food." (The Liturgy Documents, General Instruction #283) It is made in such a way that it can be broken and shared among those present at worship.
WHAT: Bake approximately 15—20 round, flat loaves of bread, using parish recipe, 4—5 times per year.
TIME: Approximately 1 1/2 hours each time.
SKILLS: The desire, willingness and ability to bake bread.
TRAINING: Demonstration once each year.

 

EUCHARISTIC MINISTER

IMPORTANCE: To extend table hospitality to those attending liturgy at Sacred Heart.
WHAT: Distribute the Eucharist at scheduled weekend Masses and other special liturgies as they occur throughout the year. Take Communion to the sick and homebound.
TIME: One scheduled Mass per month and one or two special liturgies during the year.
SKILLS: A reverence for the Eucharist, a basic understanding of liturgy, appropriate dress and demeanor.
TRAINING: Approximately four two-hour sessions. Usually one additional meeting per year.

 

MINISTER OF HOSPITALITY (GREETER)

IMPORTANCE: To create an atmosphere of friendship and fellowship
WHAT:

Welcome parishioners and guests at all scheduled liturgies. Distribute liturgy aids. Take collection. Distribute parish bulletin and/or other materials after Mass. Prepare church for next liturgy.

TIME: One-half hour before and after liturgy.
SKILLS: Ready smile, warm and welcoming manner, dependability
TRAINING: At least four two-hour sessions.

 

MASS FACILITATORS

CONTACT: Pastoral Associate
IMPORTANCE: The Mass Facilitator is responsible for the overall smoothness of the liturgical celebration. S/he oversees the entire preparation for the specific liturgy.
WHAT: Insure that all ministries are covered. Insure that all is ready for the celebration. Attend to all special circumstances. Assist in acclimating visiting clergy to Sacred Heart.
TIME: 30 minutes every third week.
SKILLS: A basic knowledge of liturgy; an appreciation and basic knowledge of the duties of every liturgical minister; an ability to communicate assertively with other ministers.
TRAINING: Basic formation in ministry; specific instruction in the duties of specific ministries.
